Respond to your choice of TWO of the three below prompts. These two responses should each range from roughly 500-750 words, making a total of 1000-1500 words for the entire exam. Your responses must be submitted via Blackboard before the end of the day on Wednesday, March 9th. If Blackboard should have an unplanned outage, the alternative method of submission will be via email (david.gurney@tamucc.edu).

You can use all notes, readings, lecture slides, and information from any other published source that you desire in order to construct your answers, but you must cite the actual sources of the ideas or phrasing that you are using. Additionally, you should not rely on large sections of direct quotation to make up your word count. Your responses should be about you only briefly summarizing course concepts when appropriate in order to synthesize and/or apply them – not just in order to restate them, whether the words be an author’s or your own. As noted in the syllabus, APA style is preferred, but as long as there are clear indications of when you are using observations/concepts or exact wording from outside sources, no points will be deducted. Failure to at least indicate sources will constitute plagiarism and result in a failing grade.

PROMPTS:

1. You have just interviewed to work as a strategist for an upstart video streaming platform. The CEO and the rest of the hiring committee have explained to you that they are wanting to be able to compete with services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Following your meeting, you realize that you should have done more to show your awareness of the changes that have taken and are taking place due to digital distribution in the media industries.

Write a follow-up letter/email thanking the hiring committee for their consideration, using that as an opportunity to demonstrate that you understand the opportunity and challenge of their project given recent trends in digital distribution. Incorporating meaningful reference to Anderson’s “long tail” concept and at least one other reading, be sure to offer at least two distinct ideas for how they might approach the rollout of their service.

2. What distinguishes Bernie Hogan’s “exhibitional” approach to understanding online self-presentation from one that directly applies Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical approach (i.e., “presentation of the self”)? Using at least three distinct examples from readings, lectures, or your own research to illustrate how Hogan’s approach can inform our thinking about creating and maintaining presence via social media.

3. Looking at a single media platform that you regularly use, how are affordances (Ian Hutchby’s concept for describing the possibilities – both intended and unintended – of technology) are at play within it? With what other media platforms does it share affordances? Is the platform defined more by the intended design of it or has it shifted more toward usage that was/is unintended by designers (or even users)? In your answer, be sure to use specific examples of types of messages that are conveyed using the platform.
